Sowing the Seeds of the Future

A young talibé's journey from adversity to hope thanks to Maison de la Gare's agricultural apprenticeship program

Mamadou comes from Djifer, a coastal village in Senegal’s Sine-Saloum region where farming is a way of life. From the time he could walk, he followed his father into the fields, learning as his father sowed, watered, and nurtured the land. These early experiences planted a dream in his heart … to one day return home and transform his family’s fields into a thriving, sustainable farm.

Like most of the boys in his village, Mamadou was sent to a daara in Saint Louis at a young age to study the Koran. Life there was harsh. Far from his family and often lacking basic necessities, he faced daily challenges with quiet strength. Through it all, his dream endured.

In Saint Louis, Mamadou found a lifeline in Maison de la Gare’s center. He began visiting the center regularly for hygiene care, meals, and medical support—essentials that gave him stability and a sense of belonging.

Then, during a recent Christmas celebration at the center, Mamadou attended an information session led by program coordinator Noël Coly. When he heard about the agricultural apprenticeship program, his dream was rekindled. Now 16 years old, Mamadou saw a path back to his roots. With his marabout’s blessing, he enrolled in the program.

From day one, Mamadou stood out. He arrived early, prepared and eager to learn. On Thursdays and Fridays—his days off from studying the Koran in his daara—he devoted himself fully to the fields, experimenting with planting techniques and caring for the plants. His dedication quickly caught the eye of his trainer, Sulayman Bah, who began entrusting him with important responsibilities. Today, Mamadou is Sulayman’s right hand, guiding his peers and helping refine the farming methods.

Through his apprenticeship, Mamadou has gained hands-on expertise in soil and water management, fertilization, and sustainable cultivation. But his growth goes far beyond the technical. He has developed patience, discipline, and a deep sense of responsibility. He mentors younger apprentices, shares his knowledge generously, and fosters a spirit of teamwork that lifts everyone around him.

Maison de la Gare’s support goes beyond teaching. Mamadou receives personalized guidance and encouragement, helping him to progress every day and to build the confidence and skills he’ll need to succeed when he returns to Djifer.

That day is coming soon. Mamadou is preparing to take over his family’s land—not just to farm it, but to revitalize it. He carries with him agricultural know-how, but also a renewed belief in himself and his future. His story is a powerful reminder that, with passion, perseverance, and the right support, even the most distant dreams can take root and flourish. He is a model and inspiration for younger talibé children.
