Abdoulaye — Reclaiming His Childhood, and His Future

One child's quiet transformation in Maison de la Gare’s Yaakaar program

At just 15 years old, Abdoulaye has already lived through challenges that no child should face. He lost his father at a young age and grew up living with insecurity and heavy responsibilities. While still a young child, he was sent to a daara in distant Saint Louis, where he spent years living away from his family in difficult and unstable conditions. Life there offered little comfort, little individual attention, and few opportunities to express himself. Like many talibé children, he learned early to stay quiet, stay alert, and simply endure.

The loss of his father left a deep mark on Abdoulaye’s early life. His mother, facing overwhelming economic and family challenges, had to shoulder the needs of the household on her own. Abdoulaye grew up with the constant awareness that he would have to become strong very quickly so that he could support his family one day. Behind his calm exterior, there was already unusual maturity for a child his age.

When Maison de la Gare first met him, Abdoulaye was quiet, reserved, and intensely observant. He spoke little, but his determination to learn was unmistakable. The educators quickly noticed in him a deep respect for others, strong discipline, attentive listening, and a natural sense of responsibility — qualities far beyond his age, shaped by years of having to endure in the face of severe hardship.

Everything began to change when Abdoulaye joined our Yaakaar residential school program. For a child who had known only instability, the transition was profound. Here, he finally has what every child deserves: a clean, comfortable bed; dignified sanitation and hygiene; daily educational support; regular meals; and, above all, a safe, stable place to grow. For the first time in years, he can rest without fear, study without distraction, and simply live his adolescence. The structure of the program gives him the rhythm and predictability he never had before.

A gentle transformation

Little by little, Abdoulaye is changing in ways that are both subtle and deeply meaningful.

He now participates actively in group activities, speaks with more confidence, and takes pride in the responsibilities the educators entrust to him. He helps younger boys with their homework, keeps his space meticulously tidy, and is often the first to volunteer when something needs to be done. His smile comes more easily. He plays. He shares. He laughs with the other boys. He is rebuilding emotional stability and a sense of belonging — the foundations of childhood that were taken from him too early.

The educators witness this change every day. They describe him as thoughtful, reliable, and deeply motivated. He listens attentively, asks questions, and pushes himself to improve. His progress in reading and math is consistent, and he is beginning to feel genuine pride in his accomplishments. Over the months, for a boy who once kept everything bottled up inside, these small steps are powerful signs of confidence and healing.

And now, Abdoulaye is beginning to dream again.

He hopes one day to have a stable job — “in an office,” he says with a shy smile — so he can support his mother and help his family. It is a simple dream, but one that reflects a deep desire to build a dignified future, far from the precarity he has known. The fact that he can imagine such a future is itself a remarkable transformation.
