Joshua Efford (England)
Literacy Program

Joshua Efford participated for six weeks as a volunteer in Maison de la Gare’s literacy program. During this time, he dedicated himself with seriousness and generosity to educational support of talibé children.
Each morning, Joshua led literacy workshops in French, tailored to the children’s varying levels. With patience and determination, he helped the students progress in reading, writing, and arithmetic. His teaching approach, based on encouragement and positive reinforcement, strengthened the children’s motivation and self-confidence.
In the afternoons, Joshua taught English to small groups of older talibé children. These sessions were fun and educational, sparking genuine curiosity and enthusiasm for learning English.
Over the weeks, Joshua succeeded in creating a warm and stimulating learning environment. He also shared in daily life at the center, playing an active role in everyday activities and forming strong bonds with the children and the team members.
We sincerely thanks Joshua for his remarkable commitment. His time with us was a true source of support for the children and an inspiration to all who worked alongside him.
Joshua shares his experience with us in his own words:
« Maison de la Gare was a fantastic charity to volunteer with, and a great first experience traveling to Africa. It was very rewarding to teach French and English and learn some Wolof along the way. I was completely immersed in a French-speaking organization and a French-speaking host family. Everyone I met was the friendliest and most welcoming people I have ever met. It is true that Senegalese "Teranga" (hospitality) is at the heart of the culture of this beautiful country.
My host family was such a great support. I had the opportunity to try all sorts of local cuisine and understand more about Senegalese culture. They made me feel as though I were part of their family.
Maison de la Gare’s support is quite possibly unmatched. Through every step of the process, they are there and wanting to help. Throughout my stay, I had the opportunity not only to explore Saint-Louis, but also to travel and discover other sights in Senegal.
For anyone who wants an immersive French language experience, who wants to develop teaching or other skills, and who wants to explore such a rich culture, I would say that Maison de la Gare in Saint Louis is the place to go!!"
